The beauty of this place is magnificent in any time of the year. The nature in here pleases not only artists, but everyone, who will see this wonderful place. The first documentary data about Kholuy concern to the 16th century. It is the letter of Grand Moscow Duke Ivan Vasil’evich, which was written in 1546. In the documents dated on 1613, the large village Kholuy is already mentioned as the icon painting centre and it was given to the prince Dmitryi Pozharskii for clearing of Moscow from the Polish interventionists.
From the beginning of the 18th century the skill of icon painting develops rather quickly. Kholuy icons were delivered to Northern provinces of Russia. They were: Vologodskaya, Arkhangelskaya, Olonetskaya and St. Petersburg provinces. They were delivered to the capital as well. Kholuy received orders from abroad, too. It received them from Bulgaria, Serbia, and Macedonia. The level of literacy was high in Kholuy. In 1853 there were six book shops in this village. The first in the Vladimir province two- class school of the Ministry of Education was opened in Kholuy. Kholuy was the big cultural centre and it drew to itself attention of scientists, researchers of culture and writers. There was the academician N.T. Kondakov, the publicist V.P.Bezobrazov, the writer Mel’nikov-Pegorskii P.I. in here. There is a mention about our settlement in Chekhov literature, too. A.M.Gorkii was writing about Kholuy as well. Kholuy is the most beautiful part of the central Russia with the rich history and the magnificent nature. For a lot of centuries it inspires workmen and painters on creation of products of national decoratively applied art. Not without reason elders are saying, that everyone who comes to Kholuy, falls in love with its charm for ever. |
