For the first time Kholuy workmen- icon painters were mentioned in documents of 1673. Researchers of icon painting crafts of Palekh, Mstera and Kholuy point out, that before all, painting of icons has arisen in Kholuy. In the 17th century the large village Kholuy was the acknowledged centre of icon painting.
The Kholuy icon developed on the tradition of the Byzantian painting of icons. Due to that Kholuy was always opened to environmental changes; here within several centuries its own unique style was made. Its characteristic feature is the special attention to the substantial side of the product.
